Rancho Pescadero reopens and joins Hyatt’s Unbound Collection – Business Traveller


Hyatt’s Unbound Collection has welcomed a new property in Mexico’s Baja California Sur.

The beachfront Rancho Pescadero first opened in 2009 in the town of Todos Santos with just 12 rooms before temporarily closing for four years. It has now reopened with 103 keys, design by Mexican architect Alejandra Templeton of Indigo Anil and a number of sustainable initiatives.

The 12-hectare resort features 335 metres of ocean frontage with nine interconnected gardens, two farms and a citrus orchard, along with a sea turtle hatchery, a tropical bird sanctuary and hiking/biking paths throughout.

Rooms and suites feature boho-chic decor, private roof decks and outdoor living spaces with day beds. Custom-made fairtrade pieces have been made for the resort by hand-selected artisans from Templeton, and include Talavera bathroom tiling handmade in Tlaquepaque, steel headboard with leather tassel detailing made in Chihuahua, copper vases from Michoacan and fabrics from Tijuana.

The resort also has two oceanfront villas with direct beach access, outdoor showers, spacious patios with plunge pools and fire pits.

Dining concepts include Botanica garden restaurant; social hub and gathering spot Centro, which serves Mexican cuisine beside two outdoor pools; and seafood restaurant Kahal which offers a raw bar and selection of caviars and fresh seafood sourced from Punta Lobos. The resort also has a cocktail bar and a rooftop breakfast bar.

The 2,322 sqm spa features an onsite apothecary, allowing guests to create their own blends of homegrown herbs which are  foraged from the gardens and transformed into oils and scrubs for spa treatments. Additional leisure facilities include a hydrotherapy circuit with an ice fountain, steam room, shower and Himalayan salt sauna; Reformer pilates; yoga; a lap pool;  and an indoor/outdoor gym with TRX and state-of-the-art equipment.

Activities such as ceviche-making, sunrise meditations, yoga, sustainability tours, gardening workshops and aromatherapy are offered free of charge to guests.

To preserve the local landscape the resort says that it has replanted native plants, which were moved into a nursery during construction and transplanted onto berms built on the backsides of buildings. Additionally it has introduced a new desalinisation and water bottling plant to ensure a constant supply of fresh drinking water, and only uses electric carts and bicycles throughout the property.

The property is adding a large solar farm to support its goal of investing to its own fully sustainable power grid, and the team are building 170 homes for employees and breaking ground on a technical school that will be open to all residents of the area.

Hyatt launched The Unbound Collection in 2016, which it describes as “a portfolio of new and existing upper-upscale hotel properties, ranging from historic urban gems to contemporary trend-setters, boutique properties to resorts and private home accommodations”.

There are over 30 hotels in the collection, with recent additions including Tornabuoni Hotel in Florence, Hotel du Palais Biarritz, and Grayson Hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
