West Des Moines family sees lava flow from Mauna Loa

One West Des Moines family happened to be on vacation in Hawaii when the Mauna Loa eruption started.The Ross family didn’t think their Thanksgiving vacation to the islands would turn into a sightseeing opportunity of a lifetime. “You’ll never forget it. And it’s just one of those things. You just couldn’t look away. You just wanted to keep looking at it,” Perry Ross said. The lava flow is getting closer to a busy highway, and that created headaches for state officials who had to put up “no parking” signs for safety reasons.”There were hundreds of cars parked on the street just to get a glimpse of something that, you know, I’m sure around here doesn’t happen very often,” Ross said.The Ross family is headed back home Wednesday. They say this is a vacation they’ll never forget. “We’re kind of lucky, actually, just to be able to be here while this is all happening,” Ross said. While the flow is moving closer to a road, officials say there is no imminent threat to any homes right now.
